Islington Boxing Club enjoyed all round success at the capital’s intermediate championships, with under-60kg entry Masood Abdulah, under-64kg fighter Ewan Jenkins and under-81kg boxer Ion Olaru all triumphing in their respective divisions
Abdulah was drawn in a straight final against Fahad Salum of Lansbury, with the Islington boxer starting well, and pushing his opponent onto the back foot. Despite sustaining an arm injury earlier in the fight, Abdulah gamely continued, allowing him to overcome Salum in the final round.
Meanwhile under 64kg fighter Ewan Jenkins, found semi-final boxing success against Jahid Munim of West Ham. Jenkins faced staunch competition in the final against Earlsfield rival Alfie Winters, who tried his best to force the contest early on. Though Jenkins sustained a point deduction for pushing Winters’ head down, the Islington boxer powered on to win the title.
There was a debut appearance from under-81kg boxer Ion Olaru, a newcomer to boxing, beating Martin Dimitrov of Dagenham. Niall Hatton of West Ham made a worthy opponent in the final, yet Olaru pipped him to a win and claimed the title for Islington.
Islington boxing favourite Chris Cunningham, valiantly fought a close match in Dagenham, but was beaten by Fairbairn boxer Joshua Gustave in the final of the under-75kg category.
Islington Boxing Club enjoyed success across the south of England during the week. Wednesday’s Hoxton’s Lion show was won by 14-year-old Roxanne Fraser. Islington Boxing Club’s under-15 favourite produced a solid win against Diamond Scarlett of Harrow.
Twin brothers Kyren and Caiden Hughes travelled to Surrey for a midweek gain at Guildford City show. Both 14-year-olds turned in a great display in their respective matches to secure sweeps, with a first club win for Caiden Hughes. Islington Boxing Club took to Twitter to celebrate the identical brother’s respective successes.
