The former Exeter forward will step away from rugby with immediate effect after being advised to take a break from the rugby by a  medical specialist.

He has expressed deep frustration with the situation after a run at Saracens  marred by injury.

He has only appeared in 17 games over his three seasons at the side.

Conlon said: “I’m pretty gutted I’m having step away now. I was hoping to be involved a bit more this year after some frustrating seasons with injury.

“The club have been amazing with me, supported me the whole way through and I can’t thank them enough.”

Director of rugby Mark McCall added: “Joel is retiring from the game due to injury, but we know he will be very successful in the next chapter of his life and we wish him every success.”

The flanker moved from Gallagher Premiership rivals Exeter Chiefs to Allianz Park in the summer of 2015  and made 17 appearances in all competitions.

Conlon lead Saracens in the summer as they triumphed in the Premiership Rugby Sevens.
