Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri believes his side can turn around a one goal deficit in tonight’s League Cup semi-final against Tottenham.
The Italian told his club’s press conference: “We discussed with the players how to try to improve the approach, the motivation and determination so we are trying to change something in training, pre-match and everything. We all have to react on the pitch.
“We have some players with the characteristics to be a leader, such as Azpilicueta, David Luiz, so I think they can help all the other players to get the right mentality.”
The blues go into tonight’s fixture at a disadvantage. Harry Kane’s penalty gave Spurs a 1-0 first leg home victory earlier this month.
Meanwhile, Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino says his team can’t use injuries within the squad as an excuse for any poor performance or downturn in form.
“We are going to be there trying to win the game, but we cannot, winning or losing, say that we don’t have enough squad to be involved or to arrive at the end of the season fighting in four competitions. That is football. It is circumstance,” he said.
Tottenham are currently suffering from an availability crisis. Harry Kane is out with an ankle injury, whilst Dele Alli (hamstring) and Heung-Min Son (international duty) are also unable to play.
There is some good news for the Spurs squad however. Lucas Moura and Moussa Sissoko are back in the frame for tonight’s fixture.
Lucas’ return could be a big boost for the squad after missing three matches. Prior to his injury however, he had scored eight goals so far this season.
Victor Wanyama is also back in training and is in the final stages of recovering from a knee injury.
