The deal is expected to lead an increase in salaries for players, as well as generating better facilities and coaching within the game.

The Women’s Super League deal, which is thought to be worth around £8m a year, is the largest ever in women’s football.

It sees the top Women’s football league’s games broadcast on both BBC and Sky Sports from next season.

Tom Garry, women’s football writer, believes that the deal will revolutionise women’s football in the country.

Monumental deal

He claims it’s the most important deal in the sport’s history within the UK and perhaps even worldwide.

“It’s monumental, we’re seeing sums we’ve never seen in women’s football before combined with the exposure of being on Sky Sports and BBC,” he says.

The deal will lead to increased salaries for players, as well as generating better facilities and coaching within the game.

New scheduling of games will be more spread out, which means more jobs for journalists within women’s football.

Long awaited deal

Garry states that the reason to why it took so long for a deal of this magnitude to happen, is because of the reluctance of broadcasters.

“It just wasn’t possible to have these games on BBC One ten years ago, most teams weren’t even training full time,

“Broadcasters weren’t willing to take the risk on an unpolished product,” he says.

The deal has received some backlash from internet trolls on social media, though the majority of the reception has been overwhelmingly positive.

“The negative comments are a tiny minority a lot of engagement now is people commenting more analytically on the game,” Garry says.

Come a long way

Women’s football is “a million miles” from where it was 20 years ago according to Garry.

“The WSL has developed so much into a product we can now all be proud of,” he adds.
