Pitman has been taking a break from the game to train as a police officer.

Chelsea Pitman is “delighted to be back” in England after a few years away and is looking forward to joining the London Pulse for the 2023 Netball Super League season.

The former-Australian international said “I 100% want to commit to being an athlete again. I want to be back in the Roses squad in a World Cup year”.

The London Pulse reached the Super League semi-finals last season for the first time since their inception in 2019. They have a young set of players with an energetic style.

“The youth, the flair that they play with – it’s an exciting style of netball,” said Pitman.

Originally playing for Australia, Pitman switched allegiances to join England in 2017 through her Yorkshire-born father. She was an integral part of the Roses’ Commonwealth win in 2018.

But after not being offered a new contract in 2020, she took some time off from the sport to train as a police officer.

“I never announced my retirement and I openly said I wanted to keep playing,” she said. “I never said I’d step away but I didn’t think I’d actually come back.”

She returned to netball in 2022, playing in the Suncorp Super Netball competition in Australia and winning the league with the West Coast Fever as a training partner. This meant she was only training with the team part-time and didn’t get to play many games.

Her return to the Netball Super League comes after she had suffered two miscarriages and an ectopic pregnancy in two years.

Pitman often uses her platform to discuss her mental health and has shared the challenges she faced when stepping away and returning to the sport she loves.

After a tough couple of years, her main focus is to enjoy herself while returning to the sport she loves.

“I want to enjoy the journey. Everyone says ‘it must’ve been amazing winning that gold’ and it was but sometimes you’re so focused on the end goal that you forget about enjoying the small things along the way,” she said.
