Owen Farrell dropped for the first time since the 2015 World Cup.

Head coach Steve Borthwick’s decision comes as he takes charge of the team for just the fourth time.

England captain Owen Farrell is expected to be dropped for Saturday’s match against France, with Marcus Smith set to return to the starting XV and Ellis Genge stepping in as captain.

It will be the first time 31-year-old Farrell has been dropped since the 2015 World Cup and could prove to be a pivotal decision with the 2023 tournament due to begin in September.

With vice-captain Courtney Lawes absent due to injury, Ellis Genge is expected to take the helm, leading England for the first time.

Farrell has struggled to find his form recently with goal-kicking struggles leading him to turn to England legend Jonny Wilkinson for advice.

England go in to Saturday’s match third in the standings, with Scotland above and France below them.

England vs France will take place at 16:45 on Saturday 11 March in the fourth round of the Six Nations tournament.
