A world record attendance for a women’s domestic football match has been set at the FA Cup final.
77,390 fans attended Sunday’s final at Wembley, smashing the previous record of 60,739 who watched Barcelona and Atletico Madrid play in 2019.
Chelsea won the game 1-0, courtesy of Sam Kerr’s 68th minute strike.
Kerr’s winner secured the club’s third consecutive FA Cup, and their first piece of silverware this season.
Chelsea are also only one point behind Sunday’s losing opponents, Manchester United, in the Women’s Super League, and have a game in hand.
Pointing out that final a decade ago was watched by only 4,900 fans at Doncaster’s Keepmoat Stadium, many commentators say Sunday’s record attendance shows how far women’s football has come.
Chelsea Manager Emma Hayes thanked Chelsea fans after the game following a tricky season.
“I’m a football fan. I’ve watched how much my club has suffered this year with ownership changes, the men’s team hasn’t been brilliant. Chelsea fans this is for you,” Hayes said in the post-match press conference.
Hayes also praised matchwinner Kerr, calling her performance yet another example of her “taking responsibility at the top end of the pitch.”
