London Lions and Paris Basketball will go head to head at 19:30 this evening at the Copperbox Arena in London. Both sides currently sit at joint first on the EuroCup table, having each won their last three consecutive games.
Lions and Paris have faced each other twice previously, with each team having won one game – Paris won the first matchup in December 2022 by 93 points to the Lions 80, but the Lions responded with a 96-85 win in March of this year.
Both teams are unbeaten so far in this year’s competition. American guard Matt Morgan has been a standout for the Lions, scoring more than 20 points in two of the last three games, including a 21 point effort against 2022-2023 silver medallists Prometay Slobozhanske. Chairman of the Basketball Journalists’ Association John Hobbs says he’s looking forward to the “fascinating battle” between Morgan and TJ Shorts, the equally prolific Paris Basketball guard who has come one assist short of a double-double in two of his last three games, while maintaining an almost identical scoring average to Morgan (Shorts has 17.3 points per game to Morgan’s 17.0).
A positive result for the Lions could help basketball in the UK as a whole, and “further heighten the stock value of the British Basketball League, who are growing their product and investing millions to do so”, according to Hobbs. A £7m investment from Miami firm 777 Partners in 2021, which the BBL itself described as ‘a benchmark of investment previously unseen in the sport’, provided a launching pad which has resulted in ‘record viewing and attendance figures’ in the last twelve months according to the League.
In any case, fans can expect a scintillating contest this evening. Hobbs predicts that Paris will be the Lions “toughest opponent so far, due to to the vast array of experience and talent they have on the roster”. Paris Basketball and the Lions will be hoping that they can continue their sparkling run of form in this year’s contest.
