West Ham defender Vladimir Coufal has claimed that his former teammate Declan Rice is ‘even better’ at Arsenal than he was for the Irons. The comments came after West Ham’s 3-1 Carabao Cup victory over Arsenal at the London Stadium.
It was Rice’s first time returning to his former club, and the £105 million summer signing was met with a mix of cheers and boos from his former fans.
The Czech international’s comment that his former captain “deserved” the move across the capital has surprised fans. Damien Lucas, who writes for fan site Hammers News, described them as “weird” and said they will “irk some fans.”
Coufal went on to add that Rice stopped by the West Ham dressing room after the match.
“He went to our changing room to say ‘hello’ to us and ask how we are so we had a little chat with him”, Coufal told Sky Sports News.
For most West Ham fans, the comments will do little to distract from their celebrations. This was their first victory over the North London side in nearly five years.
They face a tricky trip to Anfield in the Quarter Final on the 19th of December. Their opponents Liverpool, are looking to win their second Carabao Cup in three years. West Ham on the other hand, haven’t made it past this stage of the competition in a decade.
