The Olympic Qualifier Series for urban sports happened for the first time in history this weekend.
The four urban sports include breaking, climbing, skateboarding and BMX.
A total of 18 past Olympic medallists across three sports competed at the Olympic Qualifier Series (OQS) in Shanghai.
In the Olympic Breakin’ Competition, athletes, known as Breakers or B-boys/B-girls, face off in intense dance matches called “battles.”
Breaking, a dynamic and exhilarating form of dance, is making the journey to Paris but this historic moment begins with the Olympic Qualifier Series.
Each Battle pits two dancers against each other.
Battles will consist of two or three rounds, depending on the competition phase.
The competitions will then be judged by nine experts using a comparative judging system based on five criteria.
The five criteria are musicality, execution, technique, vocabulary and originality. This assessment ensures that only the most versatile and innovative Breakers advance.
The OQS has 40 B-Boys and 40 B-Girls competing at two key events, including in Shanghai, the second will be in Budapest.
Athletes can get up to 50 points at each event, the average is then used to determine the top 10 Breakers. The 10 Breakers from each category will secure their Olympic spots.
The addition of breaking to the Olympics represents a significant recognition of the sport’s cultural and athletic value.
