From Lambeth to European greatness, Ademola Lookman’s hat trick wins the Europa League for Italian team Atalanta BC.
The Italian side were pegged as the underdogs against Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen. However, Lookman’s goal in the opening 12 minutes set the tone for the rest of the match as he and his team continued to defy expectations.
The London born winger, who now represents Nigeria at international level, skipped away from Leverkusen midfielder Granit Xhaka before curling a second into the bottom corner just 14 minutes after the first.
While Leverkusen have orchestrated remarkable comebacks in their unbeaten season, it became apparent that they would need a miracle to maintain their winning streak.
Lookman’s groove continued with little fightback from the groggy German side who may have been suffering from celebrating their unbeaten domestic campaign.
He completed his hat trick just after the 70-minute mark. Lookman fired the ball across the goal into the top corner. The goal meant an almost certain victory for the Italian side and sent the fans into pandemonium in Dublin.
Who is Ademola Lookman?
The Lambeth boy who started his footballing journey in a local Sunday league team in Waterloo. He had dreams of greatness and got his first glimpse into the professional setups when scouted by South London side Charlton Athletic in 2014, a Championship side at the time.
Lookman eventually entered the premier league with a move to Merseyside when he joined Everton in 2017. However, he struggled to make his mark, scoring just once in 36 appearances.
While many English-born players fear moving to Europe, Lookman embraced the opportunity by going to Leipzig but again saw little playing time.
However, the man from Lambeth finally found his home in Northern Italy at Atalanta. Lookman has become a regular starter since he signed in 2022,making 60 appearances and scoring 22 goals.
