Islington Council has clashed with TFL over surprise plans to close Holloway Road from October 21st.
The road will be closed for three months as part of a £25 million pound replacement of the Upper Holloway Bridge.
Islington Council has criticised TFl’s late announcement of the closure.
In a statement on Tuesday, Councillor Claudia Webbe, executive member for environment and transport on the council, said she was dismayed by the “short-notice, unplanned closure”, which she called ‘unfair’ on local residents and businesses.
She predicted that the closure would “spread disruption far and wide, including during the school half-term break and Christmas.”
But TFL says the closures are needed to transfer crucial utilities before the road bridge’s demolition and reconstruction.
In a statement for City News, Nick Fairholme, Director of Projects and Programmes in Surface Transport, apologised to residents and businesses for the additional disruption this closure will cause.
He blamed the closures on “unexpectedly complex utility services in and around the Upper Holloway Bridge.”
Islington Council has said it is looking at ways to minimise travel disruption while the road is closed.
