Islington’s Park Theatre is hosting a theatre programme for local residents affected by dementia.

Funded by Islington Word Festival, an annual event exploring freedom of expression, ‘Park Players Reminiscence’ supports those affected by dementia through social interaction and creative exercise.

The weekly workshop runs every Monday until 19 December, culminating in a final performance. The programme, which returns for a second year, is part of Haringey Dementia Action Alliance.

According the the Alzheimer’s Society, 225,000 people develop dementia each year, or one person every three minutes. The total cost of dementia in the UK is £26.3 billion.

While there is no cure for the disease, research suggests people who are more socially active may have a slightly reduced risk of developing dementia.

Park Players Reminiscence seeks to provide alternative care and support.
