Islington council’s executive committee has announced that it will be removing permitted development rights for shops in the borough.
Previously, these rights allowed for businesses like Estate Agents to buy up empty shops without any formal planning consent. The decision to stop these rights has come in the wake of concerns about the extent that Estate Agents dominate the high street, most notably Upper street.
There are 111 Estate Agents in Islington, meaning it has the second highest number of any London borough. The council is concerned about the lack of independent shops getting a look in.
