The mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, and the City of London Corporation announced the Museum of London will receive £180m in combined funding.
The contribution will help fund the £250m project to create a new home in derelict West Smithfield buildings.
This will be the biggest ever investment in culture by city hall.
The museum has had a longstanding problem, it’s location.
It sits above a busy roundabout in Barbican and can be easily missed unless you know where to go.
It also is running out of space for more than its 6 million objects it houses.
The museum, built in 1976, currently tells the history of London from 450,000BC to the present.
They hope that the move, and boost in funding, will double the average number of visitors from 1 million to 2 million.
The museum will make its planning application by 2018, with hopes to open in 2022.
