Virgin Media is set to begin work in an upgrade of its broadband service in High Barnet and Friern Barnet areas following a campaign by Chipping Barnet MP, Theresa Villiers.

The improvements are part of Virgin’s £3 billion programme, ‘Project Lightning’. 40,000 homes and businesses in the area will receive ultrafast broadband by the end of 2018.

Tom Mockridge, CEO of Virgin Media, said: “London is one of the greatest capital cities in the world, so it deserves connectivity that meets its standing on the global stage. This expansion will give Londoners the broadband boost they deserve. We urge local councils and landlords to work with us to ensure this expansion happens as quickly as possible.”

Theresa Villiers, who campaigned for faster broadband with local residents, has said: “It’s been a long battle for faster broadband provision in Barnet, and one that is not over yet. I look forward to continuing to work with Virgin and with BT to ensure that these vital upgrades are delivered.”
