The 5% cuts confirmed to start in April, parents and teachers are planning to take legal action against the council.

For each special need student, these cuts could potentially mean the loss of; a one on one teaching assistant, speech and language therapy or counselling support.

This week events organised by Hackney Special Education Crisis are meeting to gain advice from lawyers and to share their experiences, in support of the the families and teachers of students that may effected by the cuts.

The members of the organisations  have  also begun lobbying councillors and MP for Hackney, Diane Abbott to share their experices and have their voice heards.

City News have reached out to Hackney Council  which told us; ”across the country the SEND services have been chronically underfunded by central government for many years. Whilst in the past local councils have been able to subsidies these services from other areas this is becoming increasingly unattainable in the face of continues government cuts’.

Although the parents of these children recognise the council is facing pressure from government underfunding, they believe this cannot be an excuse for attacking statutory services for disabled children.

The effects of these cuts are already taking its toll on Hackney residents, but it seems the parents are not going to back down any time soon.
