Sir David Amess’ 3-year-old French bulldog, Vivienne, has been named Westminster Dog of the Year.
Sir David was a huge dog lover and throughout his career worked to fight for animal rights.
The bulldog was wearing a blue bandana at the ceremony that said “City of Southend”. This is in dedication to the MP’s long-running campaign to get Southend designated a city. This came to fruition, as the queen declared his former constituency city status after his death.
Sir David tweeted pictures of him and the “lovely Vivienne” two weeks before his death as he asked for people to vote for her in the competition.
“Every time I walk into the room Vivienne throws herself at me, lies on their back with her legs in the air to be tickled.
Vivienne was entered by Sir David’s friends, Andrew Rosindell and Mark Francois.

Founded in 1992, the competition gives parliamentarians the opportunity to highlight the important work that they have done in Parliament on dog related matters. This also covers promoting responsible dog ownership. All Members of Parliament are able to enter.
What are your favourite characteristics of your dog?
Every time I walk into the room Vivienne throws herself at me. She lies on their back with her legs in the air to be tickled. But before that she always brings a toy so she is of a generous, giving nature.
How does your dog enhance your day to day life?
If I am feeling down, the dog lifts my spirits as she is always pleased to see me and she makes me smile.
What dog welfare issues do you think need tackling?
Pet theft is a huge problem. More needs to be done to make sure vets check microchips and encourage owners to have their dogs chipped.
Why should your dog be crowned Westminster Dog of the Year 2021?
Because she is an enthusiastic supporter of Southend becoming a city! Also, she is political royalty and wears a crown really well.
Mark Beazley, chief executive of The Kennel Club, told AP: “Whilst the competition itself is no doubt a light-hearted and fun event, it is also an excellent opportunity to showcase the happiness that dogs can bring to our lives and to raise awareness of the actions that need to be taken, both in Parliament and beyond, to promote responsible dog ownership.”
